Monique Heart, Aquaria & More 'Drag Race' Queens Sound Off On Kevin Hart's Oscar Controversy: 'Move On'

January 8, 2019

Last Friday (Jan. 4), the Kevin Hart Oscars controversy was reignited after the comedian appeared on Ellen. During the episode, Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she called the Academy to vouch for Hart and convince them to reconsider him as host of the 2019 Oscars after Hart dropped the gig due to outrage over his past anti-gay tweets. The segment prompted backlash on social media, with critics unable to find past apologies to the LGBTQ community that Hart claimed to have issued.

Monday (Jan. 7) night, Billboard gave stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race the chance to weigh in on the ongoing saga during a red carpet event for Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club. It should be noted that shortly after these interviews were conducted, news broke that Hart issued another apology to the LGBTQ community on his SiriusXM radio show, saying "If the fight from the LGBTQ community is equality, that’s the fight. The fight is the will and want for equality. I’m riding with you guys. I understand you."

On the red carpet, Drag Race season 10 winner Aquaria joked that she didn’t get a call from the Oscars to invite her to host: “fucking shady bitches,” she laughed. On a serious note, she said that 2019 was a time to not only learn to apologize, but also learn how to forgive. She added, “I think we should still keep people accountable for their words and their stance on important social issues. Actions speak louder than words. It’s like: can Lady Gaga say the gay f-word? Probably, you know what I mean? If she said it, I wouldn’t think, 'oh, she hates gay people.' It depends on the work people put into a community -- it causes a real grey area when there’s not a lot of positive backing there.”

Monique Heart, a competitor in the current season of All Stars, said it was time to move on. “How many times are we gonna keep beating someone up?” she asked. “I feel like, if someone goes, ‘I f--ked up, I recognize the error of my ways,' can we move forward? He said, 'I’m not gonna apologize again' and you know what? How many times you gotta do it? That’s like for apologizing for eating vagina. Bitch, if you didn’t like it, you didn’t do it. ‘Sorry, it’s not for me.’ Done. Move on!”

Another queen from All Stars 4, Monét X Change, questioned where we would be if people weren’t allowed to make mistakes and apologize: “I think he has work to do in terms of being an ally for us, but let’s give him that. People are cutting him off like, ‘No, you said that. We hate you. You’re cancelled.’ If people had social media back in whenever-the-fuck, we would have nobody because everyone has made a mistake or said a bad thing."

Trinity the Tuck agreed, adding, “We can’t be people that hold everything over everyone’s head. People make mistakes. You don’t necessarily need to forgive them, but you can move on. There’s other things: There’s Trump!”
